East Timorese women survivors

In late November 2017 as part of the UN’s 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women, Hivos Southeast Asia’s partner Asosiasaun Chega Ba Ita (ACbit) launched a month-long, multi-media awareness campaign showcasing the journeys of Timorese women who are survivors (not victims) of gender-based violence.

Hivos Residency Fellows, Moloka and SiMaggie, were invited to speak at ‘Impact Night November’ hosted by PLUS (Platform Usaha Sosial) and Jakarta Social Entrepreneurs at Impact Hub Jakarta. The event itself is part of a regular series aimed at strengthening the social entrepreneurship ecosystem through learning and networking sessions on various business topics.

The Bandung Food Change Lab - an exciting new social change process for a fairer, greener local food system in Bandung, Indonesia - has produced five innovative prototypes that could address common, yet often overlooked, issues affecting how low-income groups access affordable food from street vendors.

The COP23 in Bonn ended nearly two weeks ago, and during the event a number of commitments were made and initiatives sparked.

On 28 November 2017, Edwin Huizing, executive director of Hivos, opened the Open Contracting Global Summit together with Gavin Hayman, director of the Open Contracting Partnership, María Zuleta, vice chair of the Open Contracting Partnership’s advisory board, and Hans Docter, director of Sustainable Economic Development at the Dutch foreign ministry. The world global food system faces unpredictable challenges. By 2050, the world’s population is estimated to reach 9.8 billion people. This continuous increase in population growth and consumption  will lead to a significant increase in malnutrition, diseases and even deaths if we do not put a sustainable food system in place.

The fellows for our new Residency Program are here! Hivos Southeast Asia and Impact Hub Jakarta have picked Moloka and SiMaggie to join the program. Through this 3-month Residency Program, these enterprises will be nurtured and provided access to relevant actors in the ecosystem and will enjoy free access to a coworking space, networking opportunities, events, and training.

On Wednesday, the Turkish judge ruled that two human rights trainers and six human rights activists belonging to the so-called Istanbul 10* may await their trial in freedom.


100 DAYS OF LEARNING is the 2017 programme – and final edition - of knowledge platform Age of Wonderland, a global learning programme initiated by Hivos and Baltan Laboratories in 2014.
