In May 2015 at the “Provocative Seminar on Food: Challenging our Current Food System”, experts from around the world gave their perspectives on the food system in 2020. The seminar was organised in the context of Age of Wonderland, a social innovation programme jointly developed by Hivos, Baltan Laboratories and the Dutch Design Week.
The points of view expressed during the seminar stressed the necessity of dealing with food-related issues in an interdisciplinary and intercultural way. We are facing global problems that require global answers. Knowledge, insights and models from different perspectives can best help find new solutions to long-standing problems.
By also interacting with the audience, the seminar demonstrated to what extent knowledge can be deepened by being open-minded and daring to consider alternative narratives.
The urgency of our current situation is pushing us to work and think together creatively, to change the way we see nature, our food systems and our presence on the planet. The seminar created a lively exchange of sometimes very contrasting point of views, but always reflected on food as a story of hope, connection with others and a way to positively shape our society.
