‘The Fox Exploits the Tiger’s Might, a 25-minute film produced by BabibutaFilm and Hivos Southeast Asia, has won a prestigious award at the Indonesia Film Festival (FFI) 2015 for best short film. It was directed by talented young director Lucky Kuswandi, who has received nominations at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Tokyo International Film Festival.
FFI 2015 was held on Monday, 23 November at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten. It was attended by Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture, Anies Baswedan, and the Governor of Banten Rano Karno.
‘The Fox Exploits the Tiger’s Might’ was also included in the 2015 Cannes Festival selection for the 54th Semaine de la Critique. It was the only Indonesian entrant among the ten films selected from across the world; six were European, two were from the United States, and one came from Brazil.
The film focuses on sensitive subjects, such as power relationships and sexuality, from the point of view of ethnic minorities during the ‘New Order’ period in Indonesia. The story revolves around two preteen boys who discover their sexuality and the relationship between power and sex in the awkward social setting of a sleepy small town with a military base. David is the boastful son of a high-ranking officer, while Aseng’s family is an ethnic minority tobacco merchant who sells bootleg liquor.
In the film, sexuality is not only seen as passion or ‘pleasure’, but also as a part of one’s political viewpoints and personal freedom, which is how director Kuswandi invites the audience to interpret sexual diversity.
“‘The Fox’ gives me the freedom to openly address issues of power and sexuality with honesty and maturity. I had the freedom to explore all this in an art work – that then turned out to be an achievement on the international stage,” said Kuswandi.
